Endocrinology Checklist

  • The Endocrinologist’s area of clinical focus should include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and persistent acne, as well as increased hair growth and alopecia (scalp hair loss). Surprisingly, few endocrinologists are trained to diagnose or treat hair loss in women. This is unfortunate because bridging the gap between specialties has made it possible to apply new knowledge about hormones to understanding and treating androgenic alopecia.
  • The key to your success in finding the right expert is to look at experience, reputation, education, and success stories. All doctors must be trained and qualified to understand your type of hair loss.
  • Also, ask for counseling; for all individuals who call my clinic, my consultants will offer counseling. In many cases I will even require that I counsel some individuals before an examination. I do this as a part of a community outreach education program. I also use this as a time to answer all questions that clients may have about hair loss in general.
  • The important thing to remember is to not give up until you are satisfied that you have explored all your options. Be careful, because just as with many other health areas, and with the fact that hair loss among women is now reaching epidemic levels, treatment for hair loss has become a big money-making business.
